Journal Metrics are used to assess quality and impact of journals. Therefore, it is important important to understand common journal metrics to help you decide the right journals for your research. The most commonly used journals metrics are journal impact factor, Altmetrics, Google Scholar Metrics, and Scimago Journal Rankings.
Journal impact factors are found in Journal Citation Reports (JCR). JCR is a unique database which is used to determine the relative importance of journals within their subject categories. Impact factor is calculated by the number of citations received by the journal, from other journals within the Web of Science database.
The calculation is based on a two-year period and involves dividing the number of times articles were cited by the number of articles that are citable.
