Course Synopsis

This course will introduce student to mineral processing and general principle in extracting metal from ore: hydrometallurgy, elecrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy. This course will exposed student to the advantages mineral processing, crushing, grinding, sizing, classification, gravity concentration, magnetic and electrostatic separation and flotation. Hydrometallurgy: Leaching: process and mode of leaching. Leaching technique: insitu leaching, dump leaching, heap leaching, vat leaching, bacterial leaching, electrochemical leaching, Counter current leaching system. Electrometallurgy: Electrorecovery and electropurification: principles, electrochemical, electrod potential, overpotential, limited potential, electrochemical/elecrolysis cell. Pyrometallurgy: Ore treatment by roasting, calcination, and sintering. Melting and smelting, matte smelting. Reduction of iron ore from blast furnace. Direct smelting/ melting.
