The objective of the course is to look into the fundamentals of operation on internal combustion engines in term of their performance, operation, fuel requirements, and environmental impact. The topics include fluid flow, thermodynamics, combustion, heat transfer and fuel properties, with reference to engine power, efficiency, and emissions. Students will learn about the features and operating characteristics of different types of internal combustion engines, spark-ignition, diesel, stratified-charge and mixed cycle engines. At the end of this course, students should be able to understand real world engine issues and able to optimize future engine designs for specific sets of constraints (fuel economy, performance, emissions)
